St Ivo triumphed over Comberton in the County Junior Division 1 Finals.Report by Toby Reeves, 15th Feb 2009.
The first round was played at Comberton. The squad was Steven Mason at 1, with Toby Reeves at 2 and Chris Osborne at 3. St Ivo won convincingly without losing a game.
The second round was played at St Ivo on 1st February. It clashed with an Under 17 County match so it was agreed that Steven would cover County duties and Toby would relinquish his County selection and move up to play at 1. The St Ivo squad was strengthened with the addition of Nayera El-Refee at 2 with Chris at 3.
To create further excitement, the Under 11 and Mini-Squash players were invited to attend to cheer on their team and to play some County Ladder matches to improve their rankings in the County. The balcony was very busy with nearly 30 juniors and their parents.
The spectators witnessed some great squash. The strong Comberton team were very apprehensive before the start and with good reason – they did improve on their first round performance – they won one game between them. We will not mention which St Ivo player lost a game because it could embarrass her.
So, with a final result of 24 points to one, St Ivo were crowned as Junior County Division 1 Champions.
St Ivo has set out to win Junior Division 1, 2, 3 and 4 in the same season. A feat never previously achieved in Cambridgeshire. The results, with one set of matches in each Division to go, look very promising.
Our Mini-Squash players are developing fast and we are looking to see some of them play in the Under 11 league, Division 4, next year.
These wins are inspiring the other St Ivo Junior players to improve their games. Combined with the coaching support from John Carter, who kindly managed the matches for the younger Juniors on 1st February, and from trainee coaches; Robert Dadds and Toby Reeves.
The next date for your diary is Sunday 15th March, from 2pm, when the final rounds of the Junior Divisions will be played. Again, the Juniors will be invited to come along and support their teams playing at St Ivo.
Finally, the Junior End of Season Tournament is scheduled for the 29th March at Cambridge Squash Club. The St Ivo Juniors are aiming to win more than their fair share of the prizes.
